Martin Kubetz
sings
Leonard Cohen

Poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen (1934 – 2016) is a musical legend, who has touched the hearts of millions around the world with songs like "Suzanne" and "Hallelujah". To cover his work and to capture its magic is a true challenge for any musician – but even more so for a soloist, who cannot rely on elaborate band arrangements or seductive female backing vocals.

But Martin Kubetz makes it work! With his warm baritone and virtuoso piano playing, he delivers a compelling performance that truly brings Cohen’s spirit to life. Without trying to copy the uncopyable, Kubetz surprises his listeners with his original and sensitive interpretations, covering an emotional breadth from vulnerably tender to contagiously humorous and energetic. He completes his show with atmospheric recitations and anecdotes that invite the audience to dive even deeper into the world of Leonard Cohen.

A treat for Cohen fans – and everyone with an open (or a broken) heart ...

Commemorating Leonard Cohen‘s 90th birthday in 2024, Kubetz is currently presenting a reworked version of his show that brings the timeless as well as the sometimes surprisingly topical qualities in Cohen‘s work to the forefront.

Reviews

from German newspapers (translated)

"Exceptional singer and pianist Martin Kubetz enchanted the audience … Once more, 'Kubetz sings Cohen' was a feast not only for Cohen fans, but generally for the eye, ear and heart"

Antonio D‘Auria, Landshuter Zeitung

Jan 28, 2019

"Leonard Cohen is unique, copying him is completely impossible. But what works is to interpret his songs with a distinct personal note. And Kubetz succeeds brilliantly in doing so ... Long applause for the performer"

Holger Stiegler, Der neue Tag / Weiden

Nov 14, 2015

"An affectionate homage to the great song poet ... Kubetz took the liberty to give the master’s songs a very individual outfit. The resulting show made you want to listen very carefully – to Cohen’s lyrics, and especially to what Kubetz made of them ... The audience demanded several encores"

Mittelbayerische Zeitung

  • Martin Kubetz: A musical CV

Martin Kubetz (b. 1970, Munich area, Germany) has composed, sung und performed music all his life. Starting with the classical piano, he has added many instruments to his repertoire over the years, several of them self-taught – such as guitar, accordion, flute and oud (the Arabic lute). Since 2005, he has also received professional singing training. He has performed on stage since the early 1990s, in bands and as a soloist as well as accompanist for theatre plays and literary readings. Covering a wide variety of styles, he also composes music for theatre productions (about 20 plays so far), and has released two CDs with self-written songs in the German language. Even though he holds a university degree in education, he prefers working as a professional musician.

It wasn't until the age of 35 that Kubetz "caught the Cohen virus" when seeking lyrical inspiration for his own music. Wishing to give his own interpretation to the master’s songs, Kubetz single-handedly conceived and arranged “Kubetz sings Cohen”. Ever since, he has captivated audiences with his deeply felt interpretations and sophisticated arrangements. And like a good wine, he just gets better with age!

At the International Leonard Cohen Event 2018 in Budapest, Kubetz took the chance to perform at the Open Mic afternoon. This not only earned him standing ovations, but also the invitation to play a full-length show as a featured artist at the follow-up Event in Ghent/Belgium in 2022, which once more was very well received. He is scheduled to perform again at the 2024 Cohen Event in Copenhagen.
